English E-Zine 1

17. 11. 2008
English E-ZINE

Issue I

Introduction

The first issue has been dedicated to discrimination.
First off, in groups A, B and C we looked at the word 'discrimination' from the linguistic point of view. Collocations, word formation were the first problems to tackle. The second stage was discussion aimed at inspiration for writing articles. The assignment was not supposed to give any restrictions in terms of opinions, viewpoint, tone. Apart from the length and general topic, discrimination, the only requirement was an illustration in the form of a picture, photograph etc.
You will see that students from groups A, B and C looked at discrimination from a great many angles, what prevails, however, is an attitude of a witty columnist. Dealing with this topic more seriously is less to their liking.
I would like to thank them for the efforts they made.
In order to achieve authenticity of PORG students' English, I corrected only the mistakes that I thought might cause misunderstaning. I am happy to say I did not have much work to do here.

Discrimination

Sybila once said: "It will be the true end of the world when women are equal to men."

Ok, I see it is not very serious to start the article with words of a fortune-teller from Arabia, but there´s something to it.

Obrazek

I definitely am not a friend of discrimination but I don´t very much like complete equality either. We´re all trying not to discriminate anybody in any way, we are trying to give the same opportunities to everybody but it´s just not possible and I´m not convinced that it is exactly what we should do. I can talk for hours and hours about positive discrimination, about positive and negative sides of it, but I won't, I actually even don´t want to.
And now I´m getting back to the words of Sybila. If we make women equivalent to men in every way, what will stay of feminity? Men and women will becObrazekome competitors not partners, there won´t be anything special about the opposite sex.
Eva Konečná

Sex/ gender discrimination

When you say discrimination it evokes various things to people but one of the most often discussed and I think the most problematic in the Czech Republic is sex discrimination.
There are many books for little children in primary schools with short sentences that children are supposed to practise reading and writing. Except "Anne has a rabbit" the most frequent are "Daddy has a car" or "Mum got a new apron". There are feminists who are complaining about the mother being described as a cooking lady who is happy because of getting a new collection of forks and the father as the one who sits reading newspapers while waiting for his meal. I don't think that this matters much, though.
A more important thing is a different position in occupations. It is well known that men are often better paid than women on the same level and with the same education. Also, people say that men can get many jobs more easily. But that is how the employees see it – looking at the whole thing from the employer’s point helps to see some reasons. When you have to make some money you have to think a bit mathematically – when there is a sick child at home mostly it’s the woman who doesn’t go to work because she takes care of it. And it is her who has a maternity leave and who has the right to come back after three years and get her job back. We can’t say whether it is fair (although we can dispute about it) but that is the reality.

Discrimination

This paper in front of you is about sex discrimination. You might think that only happens in the Middle East and so on. But it’s happening right under your nose! Actually, right in your school!!!
What are we talking about? You might ask. Well, if you ask that, it’s clear that you are a MALE. Because all the FEMALES know what we are talking about.
Yes, it’s the RESTROOM, WC, TOILET, or whatever you want to call it. You might be unhappy that yours is redone, but we, lady-students, need a new toilet! More than you do! Frankly, have you ever sat on a toilet seat that was crooked? No. So you don’t know how we feel this way. Has anybody walked in on you when you were on your toilet, doing what you got to do? Probably yes. So you know what we are talking about in this way.
Now do you know how we feel? Discriminated, neglected and so on. We’re holding out for a hero that better come till the end of this year. We are sick and tired of waiting!
If this paper made you think about the topic, it did what it was supposed to do. If you think it was moving, please donate some money into our Equal Toilet Fund©.

Thank you for your attention and have a nice day,

Obrazek

ObrazekDiscrimination against women

Discrimination against women is a very popular subject for media nowadays. You can find articles such as: Women have lover wages than men; women are a target to sexual harassment etc., in the newspaper almost every day. But isn’t this status natural?
There were two stages in human history: matriarchy and patriarchy. There was no point when you can say that matriarchy ended and patriarchy started. The importance of men simply increased and increased. I see a parallel between this trend in history and present.
Work conditions for women (and situation of women in society generally) is getting better, when you look a hundred years backwards, the state is incomparable. For this reason I believe that we are at the beginning of new matriarchal era, which will arise much sooner than we think. Considering this opinion, I disagree with positive discrimination of women; I do not think that they should get preferential treatment. Did women do it for men, when matriarchy faded?

Discrimination - Forget the stereotypes!

I spent last Friday in a nice cozy restaurant, where everything was just perfect. The staff was superb and the tablecloth shiny like fresh laid snow. While observing the marvelous spectacle I also noticed all the well mannered customers around me. But one image keeps recalling - men helping their wives with coats, opening the door for them etc. You know them, so called "gentlemen". But here I come to my point - why is it, that it´s always us helping them? Why are women always the "better halves" and why is their sex the "fragile" one? Look at all the so called gender studies, generally claiming that a female being has a harder life than a male. No wonder they are so popular recently, although having one little catch - they are all done by women! Don´t blame me before letting me finish, my dearest reader. I am no sexist or misogynist indeed. It is all about the feeling, that we (men) are discriminated by the stiff stereotypes how a well mannered gentleman should behave. If we wish to live in a perfectly equal society, where there is no difference between men and women, we have to abandon them and really treat women and men alike.
(liberal translation: Wanna be a modernist? Become a feminist!)

The Sex Discrimination
Or a Little Disputation With Myself

The sort of discrimination most of the people imagine first is sex discrimination. At least I do, and this is probably the reason why am I going to write about it.
The fight against sex discrimination on its basical level is right, of course, women should not be getting a lower salary than men for the same work or they should not be oppressed by men in any way. So why do the feminists look so ridiculous? I mean the radical ones, I can´t say a word against liberal feminism.
It´s simply because they want women to be equal with men, which is not only exaggerated but also impossible and unnatural. Men and women simply are not equal, the only level they could and should be the same is on the political level. This is all well obvious, I suppose, but there remain a few a little bit less common questions. Just why are feminists here? I mean, when and why did our society become patriarchal? From where did the power of men come if women started to complain not earlier than at the beginning of 20th century?
Of course in an animal kingdom, specially among mammals, males are mostly dominant, so we have predispositions since being some kind of monkeys. Then in antiquity women are still subordinated but things have changed a bit, in Egypt is a woman even a pharaoh.
During the Middle Ages Christianity is instituted and a woman is often meant to be the source of badness, the male domination is much more increased. Until these days we´re carrying the legacy of the Christianity being set out. So, is it because of Jesus Christ that it took women centuries to cry out for their rights?

Trapped by the Eagle Feather Law

 Obrazek

In the US, it is forbidden by The Lacey Act, The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act to hunt eagles. There is also a section in United States Code of Federal Regulations that brings a certain degree of (positive) discrimination into the matter. This regulation gives Native Americans the right to own real eagle feathers; which is not legal for non-Native American citizens. The question is: what if a non-native finds an eagle feather lying on the ground? Why is it illegal for such a person to pick the feather up? Why does he face a $25,000 fine, whereas a Native American can not only pick up the feather if he wants to, but also has the right to hunt these protected animals? When taken to the basics, what actually defines your right to obtain a permit for hunting eagles is you race (you have to have at least ¼ Native American blood - meaning at least one pure-blood Native American grandparent). What this law regulation actually does is forbid non-native residents to fully participate in Native American religions, based on racist values: race, blood quantum and certifiable ancestry.

We should really question the fact, if and when positive discrimination really benefits the whole and when it just an artificially instilled thing that in the end comes out as bad as negative discrimination would. I think that positive and negative discrimination come hand in hand, with one you always get the other. What is the difference? I think that there is none; it is just somehow (historically?) given, that when you discriminate a minority it is bad, but when you discriminate a majority (to “help” a minority) most of the people think it is justifiable.

Are the PORG students discriminated?

The act of discrimination is sometimes quite hard to define. Teachers and students have to have different powers and rights because the teachers are the responsible ones. The relationship between the teacher and the student is by no means equal, yet we don't call it discrimination. It is absolutely crucial for every teacher to have some authority. Unfortunately the less skilful teachers have the only options how to achieve it: rigidly insist upon the rules that determine the inferior position of the students.
Of course, we do need these rules, because not all of the teachers can gain their authority due to their knowledge, ability or charisma. However, sometimes the inequality is not necessary at all. For instance, the outdoor footwear worn in the school is acceptable in case of the teachers whereas the students are punished. It reminds us of the problems with parliamentary immunity: politicians have certain concessions but they exploit them only because they have the opportunity to do so. The original purpose thus gradually loses its importance. We have to stop this! Hey, teacher leave us kids alone, do not discriminate us and take your shoes off!

WARNING: The article might seem more alarming than it actually is because the root of the problem was labelled as discrimination.

Discrimination at PORG

One might mistakenly assume that there is no discrimination at PORG, a small private gymnasium in Libeň, which proudly claims that there are exceptionally good relationships between its students. The truth is the opposite.
The mass of students at PORG can be roughly divided into two distinct groups: the ones who are smart, talented and have lots of hobbies, which usually include playing at least one musical instrument, and the ones whom any gorilla would easily surpass in both intelligence and kindness, but whose parents were rich enough to buy them a place at PORG. The latter group naturally tends to bully the former. However, nobody from the outside gets to know about it, since the victims are either too afraid to talk or don’t want to be delators for moral reasons, and the teachers are too incautious or even too regardless to notice.
This is how it has always been – until recently. Since a few weeks, a new form of bullying aimed at musically gifted students has gained huge popularity. Its inventor, a largely respected 16-year-old girl, most often called "Big K" by her minions, has brought upon a new age of terror which teachers can’t ignore anymore, no matter how much they would like to. A small number of them has already solved this problem by leaving the school, others have learned to disappear quickly anytime they catch a glimpse of a bully in action. And finally, approximately a quarter of the staff has started to take part and take the primitive bullying to a higher level – discrimination – which now starts to appear in such sofisticated forms as ignoring raised hands or lowering grades of musically talented pupils.
How long can this go on without casualties or lawsuits? Only time will show.

Positive discrimination
By definition, positive discrimination is a term describing policies which are supposed to redress the effect of negative discrimination. Many experts would rather avoid the term ‘positive discrimination’ in favour of ‘affirmate action’, but no matter how you call it, positive discrimination is discrimination like any other, for it still makes us regard some people as different as possible and as those who require special treatment.
There were two applicants for a job – a kitty (left) and a green monster (in the middle, at the background). Green monsters are dominant species on the Green planet, whereas kitties belong to the minority. The green monster’s tentacles are very long and the monster is therefore more suitable for the job than this particular kitty, whose forelegs are so short that it can’t even reach the table. However, the kitty has been given the place, because of positive discrimination.

Therefore, although I don’t want to daff aside the importance of problems women and various minorities are often still facing today, I’m not sure if positive discrimination is the right solution. If we decide to introduce a law stating that there must be 50 % of female and 4 % of homosexual ministers in the government or that secondary schools must accept a certain number of black students, we still would be dividing people into groups and determining their social status not according to their abilities, but according to their ethnic origin/ their gender/ their sexual orientation/ their age etc. This way we won’t be able to get rid of discrimination completely.

Discrimination

Discrimination is something as old as life itself. Since life on Earth started, some organisms have had it easier and some have had it harder. Mother Nature did it that way and we don´t ever complain about one animal being pray for another and about stronger individuals ruling weaker. But we don´t call that discrimination, we call that natural order. But what does that word mean than?
Discrimination is: "the recognition of qualities and differences among certain things or persons and making choices based on those qualities", as wikipedia.com tells us. Between us people the most common and discussed are racial, sex, sex-orientation, religion and age – discriminations. I personally come most often across age discrimination at home. My younger sister has all the privileges, but I am being discriminated only negatively. You see?  My birthday cake has no sign of age, but she has number 8 made of chocolate! Is that fair?
No it isn´t! I´m getting less chocolate just because I am older! YUK!
P.S: The other side of discrimination and attacks against discrimination is, that I often don´t realize such  small things, like that I have a massive candle and she got no...
Lesson: Think twice, before you start complaining...!

Discrimination for the Purposes of Pure Humankind

Dear Human-people of the CHNR,

We, pure humans of the Czech Human National Republic (CHNR) hereby proclaim that each and every post-human shall be considered morally and lawfully minor to any pure-gene non-mech full Human. From now on, all of them shall be banished from our most sacred country. If they refuse, we have no other option than to eradicate this filth.

In our most modern society we are very aware that such discrimination is very unfair. Yet it is our only way to create a historically, culturally and genetically correct society. We need this discrimination for several reasons. First, discrimination is a purely human trait that most post humans lack and thus it is our holy and destined duty to discriminate at all costs. Second, discriminating keeps our population content and peaceful. What especially helps are public executions and torture.

So to get to the point of this proclamation quickly enough, discrimination is extremely beneficial if used in the most sacred hands of the Pure Human Party (PHP) and the Human-people of the CHNR. Thus:

DEATH TO ALL FILTHY AND WRETCHED NONHUMANS!!!!!!

Yours truly,

General Adam ben Aheb
Secretary for the nonhuman question of the Pure Human Party
Jakub Hampl

Discrimination
Discrimination of a nation definitely is damnation.
To prosecute a minority is to defy humanity.
The prosecutors are men invalid; to define humanity
They obviously are not trained.  Isolationist toleration
Is no better a solution to the baffling situation,
In which one is shunned by other for a factor which shan't matter.
Is there a way to suppress hatred? Is charity a scant matter?

For the former I don't know,
For the latter fear to hear.

Discrimination

Positive, negative, racial, gender, language, employment,... favourite "controversial" topic. One can´t even keep track of all of the sorts. People try to name them, distinguish them, describe them precisely etc. and I´m asking myself: Is it that important? Maybe I´m naive but I don´t think there is very much we can do about discriminating minorities. It is human nature to long for the highest social status and let others know properly if you reach it. However, I think it is sad that some people still haven´t reached the point of intellectual and spiritual serenity and they have to prove that they are better by pointing out someone´s singularity.
I don´t want to talk about chauvinism and its positives or negatives. The truth is you can´t change anyone´s feelings, no matter how hard you try. People are not disciplinable, they have to discover everything and experience it for themselves. So let´s hope that one day we will be able to throw away prejudice and deliberate ourselves from indefeasible dogmas. Let´s hope.

Break-study Discrimination
Bullying and discrimination of that kind is a dark, yet known spot on the life of Czech schools, which has always been more or less succesfuly dealt with by different institutions. However, a new issue of school assaults has emerged at PORG recently and, though at first sight seeming rather innocent, it can no longer be ignored. As some teachers have reported to the headmaster, certain students faced rude treatment by their classmates because they used to study during the breaks.
´Once I was studying my chemistry book in the lunch break because we were to write a difficult test the next lesson. Some boys from the neighbouring class came and tried to disturb me with mocking questions. Then they just took hold of my book and before I could say a word, they ran away. The other day I found my book torn apart in my locker,´ says a student from sexta. ´Now I only dare study when I assure myself that there is nobody in the classroom and in the corridor.´
This was not, of course, the only case of such an attack. Another problem is that some of the victims do not reveal anything about their experiences. ´I have given up studying in the free time between lessons. I do not want to take risks. At least, it allows me to have a rest at school and not always be considered about homework and tests,´ another student tries to soften the impression from this new problem. However, if you try to imagine what impact continuation of this might have on the future of Czech schools, you realise that not only the actual results of students, but even the effort to make schools places with pleasant atmosphere is endangered.
PORG and some other schools which have now been made aware of this hidden threat are seeking a solution. ´We will punish anybody who is proved to have threatened others in this way, ´ states strongly the headmaster of PORG. ´Students must be able to study freely at any time.´ At PORG it seems quite likely to be a succesful approach as there are fewer than 200 students who usually know each other. Bigger schools have a great deal of work in front of them, but we can only hope that this menace will be handled.

´I just have to study before we write a test, but now I have to worry about something else than a bad grade, ´ says a student from sexta who was one of the assaulted students.

Dicrimination

Hello,
please, don´t be silly, don´t escape, I promise I won ´t kill you! Just listen a few minutes. I will tell you the story of my lousy life and it is possible that after my little talk everybody will change his mind and loose the frightened expression from his face in case he looks at me...So just try to listen to me.
In the Antiquity I had great life. Everybody loved me. Writers wrote about me the best things I ever imagine, you know it, for example:
“More than inteligent, more than sharp, we can´t compare even Aristotel with his ingenious mind, and so on...“
But this time quickly passed and they started to gossip about me:
“Did you see him? He wakes up at night and the whole night he makes noise! What a dissipated person! I couldn´t sleep. A terrible creature he is...“
And like it comes, people made their gossips more and more ghastly:
“My sister died the night he was in the close neighbourhood... She was ill, but not so badly...I´m not sure about him and I´m afraid we should do something before we are late!“
And they started to catch my brothers and sisters and nailed them on their gates. There was a kind of martyrdom in it. Blood trickled down... and was eaten by worms. Worms became stronger and they had more little worms next year. There were more frogs and more snakes and snakes ate birds eggs, you know...And from the time, everybody from birds treat me worse than you could ever expect. When they find me in the sunshine of a day, they make a circle aroun me and start squeaking:
“My greatgreatgreatgreatgreatgreatuncle had been eaten by a snake, you criminal!“

Bravo BOY!!!
While thinking about some apparent discrimination taking place around me, I was stuck. Honestly, I don’t feel discriminated at all, and I don’t think that neither me nor my friends are discriminating anybody. That is a nice thing, but honestly, writing about anything positive is no fun. I was desperate, and I needed guidance, cheering up or someone to ask about my deepest problems (such as lack of topic for my English paper). And then I realized – I am discriminated! Hooray!

I believe you have heard about so called 'girls' magazines. Any girl from age 13 to 15 (or 18, as 'Cosmo girl' states) can find many useful things within them, ranging from beauty and fashion tips, health and relationships aid and some romantic stories to help in cruel teenagers world, not to forget a tabloid part with latest hot news about all the important celebrities. Sounds quite cool, but all these magazines are focused entirely on girls! Why don’t we, boys, have our own magazine? Why there is no paper that will take care of our boyish needs? I say that this is an outrage! Thanks god that we have at least the internet.

The tale of a discriminated ghost

 Obrazek

When his body died the soul appeared in front of God as all the other souls do and He said to it: “I am sorry I cannot allow you to enter the kingdom of heaven. But I do feel sorry for you and feel with you in your sufferings and that’s why I will make you very special – I will make you a black ghost.”
“I am sorry my merciful Lord,” the soul replied: “but how can one be a black ghost? He won’t be seen at night when he is supposed to scare people. So it is not really that good to be special like that, is it?”
But the Lord replied: “Go my black ghost! And think of it – maybe you will find out that the opposite is truth.”
The soul was very disappointed and in the form of a black ghost it descended the stairway from the gate of heaven and went to the old castle where all the ghosts stayed during the day and were hiding before the sun. But all the ghosts in the castle were white and they did not want to share their home with a black one. “Go away! You are not one of us!” they shouted at him and in the end sent him away.
He had nowhere to go and so he sat in a dungeon of a tearoom because it was dark and therefore nice for him as he did not like the sun same as all the other ghosts. There was only one man sitting here meditating with a cup of tea in his hands. When the ghost entered the room, the man opened his eyes as he could hear the noise. But he could not see anything as the black ghost vanished in the darkness of a room. The ghost flew around a few times watching the surroundings including the man but then something distracted his senses. He stopped and thought what it was. It was floating around him and hitting him to the place where humans have noses. It took some time before he realized that it is the smell of  tea that is distracting his peace. It was something very unusual for a ghost and he wanted to taste the tea. He did not know that ghosts cannot drink and so he approached the pot on the ground in front of the man and put a wee lid off. The sound of porcelain made the sitting man open his eyes again and afterwards he turned the light on thus revealing to himself the appearance of a black ghost. He got awfully scared because he had never seen a black ghost in his life. He knew the white ones but this was none of those! This was a black ghost! Something special! And any man has a habit of being afraid of new and unusual things. He stood up putting his hands on his head crying of fright: “Black ghost!!!”

Discrimination

As far as I know, discrimination surrounds us everywhere. In early years of my life it was most important to realise what kind of discrimination was worst. In my humble opinion the worst is the racial one. Well, every type of discrimination is disgusting, but the racial one has been source of international violence since something like nationslism was “discovered”.
Let me tell you about my personal experience. I can say that I will never forget this one. I am proud of being a football fan, I love that sport and I think that football is not just a game; it is also a chance for less developed countries and poor people somewhere in Africa. People all around the world love football.
Nevertheless, there is also discrimination, as it is anywhere.

Obrazek

Once upon a time, it was during “Sparta Prague era” at the begining of 21st century, I saw a prestigeous match between Sparta Prague and Slavia Prague, Czech arch rivals. It was a normal Czech first league match, nothing special, but nice to watch.

Before being substituted, one black Slavia Prague player named Adauto performed well against Sparta and was really excellent.
Despite the fact that he was the best player on the pitch, Sparta Prague fans started throwing banana peels from the stands and making noises like monkeys. At first he did not understand and started asking linesmen and referee what it meant. Then he finally understood. A few minutes later was Adauto substituted.
It was absolutely awful. I left the stadium fifteen minutes before the end of the second half.

Discrimination

In these times the problem of discrimination is permanently being discussed. Many types of discrimination have been defined, which causes that any kind of bullying, hate, laughing or disguss can be classified as some discriminaton type. A young woman doesn’t get a proper job, because she’s supposed to be pregnant in a few years? That is woman-discrimination. Gays can’t adopt a child? That is gay-discrimination. A 70 year old man has a lower salary than a 30 year old man? That is age-discrimination. And there are many other types: social discrimination, positive discrimination, race discrimination,...
Do you think narcissism can be one of those? Yes, it is. If you are interested only in yourself and if you, for example, make photos only of yourself, it’s discrimination. You discriminate every single man on this world by not being interested. Probably there should be laws, which would condemn mirrors, modelling, fashion, designers, clothing, webcams and everything, that make people care about themselves and not about the others.

Example of positive discrimination

Even in school, you can come across many marks of positive discrimination. For example, in my class, there is one “black” student, who is positively discriminated against. Everybody knows that he was admitted just because Mr. Klaus had to fulfil quotas, but we mustn’t complain. There were definitely many much more intelligent students applying to PORG. But they were unlucky because they were white.
In school he is treated differently. Professors are forced to lower their requirements. As a result, everybody has to get at least 50% so as to pass the exam, but for him, the limit is 25%. So, he has much better marks than the others. He is the best not because of his performance and achievement, but because of his different race. And it is not just marks.ObrazekSchool offers him   many financial

A dish that white students are given

advantages. For instance, when we go on a school trip, he is pays 75%. Therefore, although some of students are not so rich and can’t afford to go on school trips, he can go on as many school trips as he wants.

I should not forget to mention the different attitude of cooks at a school canteen. When a white student goes there, the cooks treat him as if he was an animal. Whereas when black student comes to the canteen, it is something completely different. The cooks can’t afford to offend him, because they would be considered as racists. As well, he is  given at least portions twice as big as a white student.

Discrimination

Discrimination is a bit general concept. We can hear about it everywhere. Everyday there are problems with racial discrimination, sex discrimination, social discrimination and all other types of discrimination. But has anyone ever though of the discrimination in the animal world? Has anyone ever considered the cute little puppies? Yes they are really adorable and sweet, but has anyone ever asked them for their desires?
We don’t have to take in consideration just puppies, but also all the smaller dogs. These dogs don’t get the same job opportunities as large dogs. What if they want to work as guard-dogs? The answer is every time almost the same: “They are too small for the job.” But honestly, have you ever tried breaking in to a flat that was guarded by a small barking dog? It’s a kind of an once-in-a-lifetime experience. These small dogs and especially puppies have really sharp teeth. They’ve got jaws full of little sharpened blades. So I think if you hire a pack of small puppies, you’ll be completely satisfied. There will be nothing left after the intruder.
But then there is another problem. Why should just dogs be preferred for this kind of job? What about an anaconda? The ultimate patrolling machine. Nothing ever gets in, or out of the patrolled object.
This case is just a drop in the ocean of discrimination in the animal world. It’s not just about the job opportunities, it’s about all the other types of discrimination similar to the human type those are burdening the animal world (racial, sex, social, and others).

Good day! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I'm getting tired of Wordpress because I've had issues with hackers and I'm looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
